How do you keep Revit performing as good as possible on your projects?

We all have experienced these Revit models that test our patience to the limit. Revit models that, while opening, allow you to walk to the coffee machine, have a coffee, a conversation or two, come back to your desk only to find out there is a dialogue asking you to say yes and showing it has only opened 13% of the model so far.

Most likely you have browsed the internet for tips and tricks, and you by now know what Revit wants and because Revit projects tend to be collaborative, it are always the other people that make your model performing slow.

Of course, you know that many factors influence Revit performance. You might have modelling standards, best practises and maybe a lot more to try and keep performance up. You might have this all worked out, and everything is under control. But what about those other teams you have to collaborate with, are they as diligent as you are?

You have a BIM execution plan stating how Revit models should be set up and how geometry should be modelled and which information needs to be provided at what time. If everyone stuck to it that would be great but do you have the time to verify all those models to see if they are compliant. How many checks do you have to do and how do you do it. You might have a checklist, some dynamo scripts, an extension or maybe you use another solution.

Over the years, we have done many Revit health check, and we have written many reports for customers with all kind of recommendations. Often these recommendations are about modelling practises, workflows and Revit related techniques. For these analyses, I had some specific tools, my own dynamo scripts and also a lot of eyeballing in the Revit models themselves. It always takes a long time to write these reports, and they get outdated as the project progresses further. We think it would be good if Revit models would be checked regularly but writing these reports takes to much time and who wants to read them?
